LITERACY VOLUNTEERS

Are you interested in helping an adult learn English?

The Literacy Volunteers of the Atheneum (LVA) program provides free instruction to adult students who want to improve their skill in speaking, reading, and writing English. The LVA offers free, weekly English classes at the Atheneum for all levels and one-on-one tutoring sessions scheduled at a mutually convenient time for both tutor and student.

Both the teachers and tutors are volunteers. Tutors are paired with a student and asked to spend one or two hours a week giving instructions on a one-to-one basis.  Experience as a teacher or with ELL (English Language Learning) training is not required – just a desire to help someone learn a new language, beginning with conversation. LVA organizers provide training and support to assist all volunteer tutors.
