Job Title: Library Associate
Department: Childrens
Reports to: Head of Weezie Library for Children 
FLSA: Non-exempt / Regular, Full-time

Summary:

The Nantucket Atheneum is seeking an enthusiastic individual to work in its children’s library. Primary responsibilities include assisting patrons with the Atheneum’s circulating, non-circulating, and digital collections; implementation of selected children’s and young adult programs; selection of children’s materials for review by Department Head.

Essential Job Functions

Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities:

· Provides readers advisory and reference services to patrons.
· Performs functions related to circulation control such as checkouts, check-ins, inquiries, renewals, reserves, and data entry.
· Answers routine questions regarding library resources, activities, facilities, rules, and services.
· Assists in creating flyers, reading lists, and guides to the literature as needed.
· Processes deliveries including unloading bins and checking in items.
· Issues library cards according to established procedures.
· Assess and collect charges.
· Shelves materials according to established procedures.
· Is knowledgeable about children’s literature and stays current on new children’s materials.
· Selects literature and related library materials for review by Department Head.
· Assists in processing, withdrawal or repairing of materials.
· Plans and implements children’s programs, including running Storytimes, craft programming, etc. with the approval of the Department Head
· Ability to market the library’s services and programs
· Assist in opening and closing of library
· Performs related work as assigned under the direction of the supervisor

Skills and Abilities:

· Basic computer skills including, but not limited to, Excel, Publisher and Word.
· Knowledge of basic library concepts, resources, and digital downloads.
· Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
· Consistent punctuality, dependability, and flexibility to fill in as scheduling demands.
· Consistent attention to detail and accuracy in all aspects of work.
· Adherence to all library policies, procedures and rules contained in the Employee Handbook and Standards and Procedures Manual
· Ability to maintain professional and cordial relationships with the management, members, and visitors.
· Ability to adapt to change and manage stressful situations professionally.
· Demonstrate flexibility as priorities and deadlines shift.
· Ability to work in and contribute to culture of teamwork and cooperation.
· Treat people with respect.

· Ability to recognize situations that require referral to the Department Head.

Education and Experience Requirements:

· Previous work experience with children in an educational setting.
· Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite: Excel, Word, Outlook
· Previous experience with databases is a plus.

Physical Requirements:

· Lifting and carrying a minimum of 15 pounds
· Strength to push or pull a loaded book cart which can weigh in excess of 100 pounds on level floor, to lift or maneuver loads up to 35 pounds onto carts, and to carry cartons of books
· Ability to operate office equipment including computers, printers, and photocopiers.
· Ability to stand or sit for extended periods of time to use computer workstations, including keyboard and visual display terminal.
· Sufficient vision or powers of observation to permit employee to read books and patron requests.
· Sufficient clarity of writing, speech, and hearing or other communication capabilities which permit effective communication.
· Sufficient manual dexterity which permits the employee to type and record library files.
· Sufficient personal mobility and physical reflexes, which permit the employee to re-shelve library materials and work at public service desks.
· Normal office exposure to noise, stress, and interruptions.
