Alan Charles Raul
Washington DC / Nantucket. Alan is a Lecturer on Law at Harvard Law School, where he teaches “Digital Governance: Privacy, Artificial Intelligence and Information Technology.” He has also taught “Cybersecurity Risks, Rules and Responsibilities” at Harvard and Georgetown where he served as an Adjunct Professor of Law. Alan was the founder and for 25 years the leader of Sidley Austin LLP’s global Privacy and Cybersecurity practice. Alan is Chair and President of the Board of Directors of the Future of Privacy Forum and is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. Alan is also Board Chair and President of the Society for the Rule of Law, which he helped found in 2018 as “Checks and Balances.” In 1990, Alan co-founded the “Lawyers Have Heart” 10K run and walk, to benefit the American Heart Association. Alan previously served in government as Vice Chairman of the Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board, General Counsel of the Office of Management and Budget, General Counsel of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and Associate Counsel to the President. Alan is a graduate of Yale Law School, Harvard Kennedy School, and Harvard College. On Nantucket, he lives in town with his wife Mary Tinsley Raul, golden retriever Harry, and children visiting from New York and London.
