EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S LETTER

DEAR FRIENDS OF THE NANTUCKET ATHENEUM

Reflecting on the past year, I am proud of the changes that the Atheneum continues to successfully navigate, and I am filled with gratitude and wonder at what we have accomplished together as we enter the future with renewed excitement about our devoted board, our talented staff, and our library’s bright future. Here are some highlights of another extraordinary year.

A LIBRARY CURRICULUM THAT IS RESPONSIVE TO COMMUNITY NEEDS

The Atheneum welcomed tens of thousands of visits and generated thousands of program experiences. Research assistance supported countless inquiries, while circulation of materials reached impressive levels, demonstrating the community’s deep engagement with library resources.

New staff members joined the team, bringing expertise and fresh perspectives to youth and adult services, enhancing program offerings for teens, young adults, and the wider community. These contributions have revitalized programming, attracting increasingly diverse audiences.

STRENGTHENING PERCEPTION AND AWARENESS OF THE ATHENEUM

A dedicated podcast series continued to highlight library history, special collections, and behind-the-scenes stories, featuring insightful conversations with staff members and community voices. Outreach services strengthened personal connections with patrons. The children’s department deepened its partnerships with schools, expanded outreach to daycare centers, and introduced new programs tailored for teens.

Staff-led programming, from contemplative workshops to hands-on learning experiences, drew participants from diverse backgrounds. The commitment to community engagement remained a core focus.

FINANCIAL RESILIENCE

Sustaining library operations requires imagination, collaboration, passion, and significant fundraising efforts. Unlike many public libraries, the Atheneum raises the majority of its annual operating budget. Through dedicated development efforts, the organization successfully met and exceeded revenue goals.

Our major fundraiser, Weekend at the Library, continues to meet financial goals by featuring a dinner with a thought leader, interactive family experiences, and intimate performances, all designed to strengthen community support and ensure financial stability.

ENABLING AND EMPOWERING STAFF

The library’s greatest asset is its staff — the embodiment of the public library’s mission. Employee housing continues to attract and retain talented professionals who enhance service quality and ensure that essential library services will continue for years to come.
